Some families in Altadena woke up this morning to find out the hard way that they’re now a statistic, and not a good one.

If you have a Chevy Silverado truck, your truck is a target for thieves who are stealing the tailgates.

Not so long ago, it was the rear seats from Cadillac Escalades that were the prime target.

Over the last few weeks, tailgates from Chevy Silverados have been stolen from all over Southern California at very high rates.

Please find a way to park your vehicles in a garage or behind a gate or fence so you’re less likely to be a victim.

If you have neighbors who may not see these posts from the Sheriff’s Station, please let them know that these vehicles are being vandalized at high rates.

If you have a suggestion about how we can more effectively get the word out to the community so we can be less vulnerable targets or so we can catch criminals in the act, please speak up.

If you see something – say something!!

As a resident of one of the many unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County, you are an important part of emergency planning and preparedness. Unincorporated areas are not part of any city and are governed by the five-member Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles. The Board acts as your “city council” and is responsible for establishing policies and regulations that affect you and your neighborhood. The Board also governs the County Departments that provide services in your area including recreation, solid waste, planning, law enforcement, fire fighting, and social programs.

The County is your first responder to disasters such as flood, fire, earthquake, civil unrest, tsunami, and terrorist attacks.

This Guide will help you to better prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters that face Los Angeles County. Our goal is to provide tips that assist you to be self-sufficient after a disaster. In addition to this Guide, we recommend that you increase your awareness of emergency situations and the skills you need to prepare your family, neighbors and your community.

The company expects power to be restored to 99.9 percent of customers who lost service by 8 p.m. Monday evening.  As of    3 p.m. PST Sunday, SCE had 42,131 customers without service.

Crews are working to restore service as safely and quickly as possible. There are 273 SCE and contract crews working currently to restore service. Some restoration efforts initially were hampered by huge trees and other large pieces of debris, which blocked access for crews to equipment.

On Sunday, SCE will have seven community outreach centers in the hardest hit areas open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. where customers can get free basic supplies, including flashlights, water and ice (based on availability). The centers are at the following locations:

The supply was passed out to available customers up until 4 p.m. on Saturday, but there were no flashlights available, only ice and water.

Edison is working as hard as possible to restore power to all customers, but according to Dave Ford, “people must realize the danger that crews face with downed trees on power lines that must be checked before power can be turned on safely.”

This is a major inconvenience for everyone and ultimately we can only blame Mother Nature. It is strongly suggested that everyone considers investing in a generator for future situations. We face strong winds each year up here in Altadena, but this is one of the strongest ones of recent record. Be safe.

WHAT:        Southern California Edison (SCE) will open distribution centers today for customers impacted by the widespread outages to pick up basic supplies, including flashlights, water and ice. Outages are expected to last through Sunday.

SCE employees will also be going door-to-door to provide safety information in the Santa Anita area near its emergency staging center (Santa Anita Park).

Altadena Community Center – Assemblyman Anthony Portantino will be giving his “State of the State” address at the next Altadena Town Council meeting scheduled on October 18th, 2011. In addition there will be two other key presentations. Town Council representatives to P.U.S.D. Bernadean Broadous and Richard Moon will be giving an update on the redistricting at the school board. There will also be a presentation by Maria Sim of Los Angeles County Public Works about a landscaping project slated for Woodbury Road. Please join the Town Council Members at the Community Center starting at 7:00 p.m. and hear these presentations first hand along with Sheriff’s Captain Steven McClean, CHP Officer Kevin Denmon plus other regularly scheduled community agenda items.  According to Jalaine Madrid, the Project Manager, the project actually started on September 27^th and it is scheduled to be completed by Wednesday October 5th, 2011. A letter was sent out back in March of this year to notify the community about this project. Select health-related businesses and health providers in Altadena are taking part in a health and information fair on Saturday, September 24th at the Altadena Senior Center, located at 560 E. Mariposa Street. FREE health screening will be available, including blood pressure and diabetes. The first 100 people in attendance get a FREE continental breakfast. This is the sixth annual event and it introduces the community to the senior center, which includes a popular fitness center complete with whirlpool. Caregivers and health professionals are welcome, too. The Health and Information fair is from 9am to noon and a variety of vendors will be on hand to answer questions, provide free advice and showcase health-related products. Fair to include over 40 vendors!
